TMCC’s men held on to secure a 3-2 victory over Utah State University Eastern on Thursday, giving the Mighty Lizards their second victory in as many matches in Scenic West play.
The hosts came out firing on all cylinders, keeping the Eagles defensive unit on their heels constantly. Early scores from Luis Chavez, assisted by Allen Somera and Ben Linnert, assisted by Wilmer Hernandez-Parra in the 13th and 19th minutes put TMCC in control, and they would take the 2-0 advantage into the half.
The match would get interesting shortly after the second half began. Second-year back Jacob Duran went down with an injury in the 55th minute, and the Eagles would net two scores in as many minutes to pull even just afterward. Colby Lee would find the net in the 58th, followed by Joseph Valle late in the 59th.
USUE’s advantage would not last long, as TMCC would pull ahead just six minutes after the Eagles’ equalizer. Sophomore forward Jahmeyel Blackman would find the net off of Wilmer Hernandez-Parra’s second assist of the day to put the Mighty Lizards up 3-2 in the 67th. Hernandez-Parra would finish the afternoon with two assists and tied for a team-high two shots.
The two squads would trade blows as the second half continued, with each defensive side coming up with a few key stops. While the visitors would threaten as time ticked down, the Mighty Lizards stood strong to keep their 3-2 advantage through the final whistle for their second consecutive win.
TMCC will look to avenge their September 4 loss to Snow College on Saturday when they welcome the Badgers to Reno for their second meeting of the season. Kickoff is set for 11:00AM and the match will be streamed live on the Lizards Sports Network.
