The Nevada women’s golf team earned its second consecutive top five finish after placing fifth at the Cowgirl Classic.
The Wolf Pack earned fifth place in the 20-team field after finishing the event at 23-over par. No team in the entire field finished under par but New Mexico State led the way, winning the event at 5-over, seven shots better than runner-up South Dakota State. With the Mountain West Championship looming in a couple of weeks, Nevada was the highest finishing team from the conference at the event, placing ahead of Boise State and Wyoming.
Leading the way for the Wolf Pack was sophomore Leah John, who earned the first top 10 finish of her career. John tied her career-low round of 71 on Tuesday to jump from a top 20 to a ninth place finish. John carded rounds of 74-73-71 for the tournament to finish at 2-over, the best tournament score to par of her career. She played an almost perfect round of golf in the final round, making 15 pars, two birdies and just one bogey.
Nevada got a top 15 finish from Victoria Gailey as she tied for 13th in the 114-player field. It marked Gailey’s second consecutive top 15 finish. She carded a 76 on Tuesday to finish the event at 4-over par. Kayla Nocum notched a career-best finish as she tied for 20th place at 7-over par after shooting rounds of 73-75-75. Anitra Khoth tied for 43rd position at 12-over, and Maddy Zunino rounded out the Pack lineup in a tie for 62nd place.
Brittany Shin of Cal State Fullerton won the individual side of the event at 5-under par. Shin bested runner-up finisher Tagiralani Luafalealo of Grand Canyon by two strokes.
Nevada has one regular season event remaining before the Mountain West Championship, the Fresno State Classic, which will be held April 12-13 at Copper River Country Club in Fresno, Calif.
