Women hold on late to secure 2-1 win over USU Eastern

Women hold on late to secure 2-1 win over USU Eastern (TMCC athletics)

Two early scores would secure a second straight win for TMCC’s Women in Thursday’s matinee with Utah State University Eastern.

An eventful first half would dictate Thursday’s contest, with all three scores from both squads coming in the first ten minutes. The Mighty Lizards wasted no time getting on the board, going up 1-0 just 17 seconds in when Yanitzia Perez-Galvan would find Katelyn Norris for her second goal of the year.

Norris’ score would set the tone early, as the Mighty Lizards dominated possession over the Eagles and outshot them 9-4 in the opening half. While the Eagles would pull even in the eighth minute, TMCC kept their focus, surrendering none more for the remainder of the match.

Emily Mendoza-Obeso would put TMCC back up for good in the 11th minute, coming across from the right and putting a deadly strike past Eagles keeper Macy Clements. Mendoza-Obeso would finish the match with three shots, one behind Norris who led TMCC with four.

While the Eagles would begin to knock on the door as time winded down, TMCC’s back line stood tall. USUE would tally just three chances in the second half despite threatening on multiple occasions, and were unable to find the net for an equalizer due to stout defending across the field from TMCC to disrupt the visitors momentum.

TMCC will return to the pitch this Saturday when they welcome Snow College for their second matchup of the season. Kickoff is set for 1:30PM and the match will be streamed live on the Lizards Sports Network.
