Nevada guard Grant Sherfield was voted the Mountain West preseason player of the year in addition to making the five-player preseason All-Mountain West team.

The Wolf Pack was tabbed to finish third in the conference, receiving two of the 20 first-place votes and a total of 189 points. All voting was done by media which covers the conference in each program’s market.

Colorado State was the media’s top pick, collecting 11 first-place votes and 207 points, followed by San Diego State with seven first-place votes and 201 points. Boise State (147 points) was fourth, followed by Utah State (127), Fresno State (119), UNLV (109), New Mexico and Wyoming (79 each), San Jose State (40) and Air Force (23).

Entering his junior season, Sherfield is the second Wolf Pack player to earn the MW's top preseason honor, joining Caleb Martin (2018-19). He becomes the sixth Nevada player to earn a spot on the conference’s preseason team, joining Deonte Burton (2012-13, 2013-14), Cameron Oliver (2016-17), Jordan Caroline (2017-18, 2018-19), Caleb Martin (2018-19) and Cody Martin (2018-19).

Last season, Sherfield was the MW newcomer of the year and was first-team All-MW after an outstanding debut campaign at Nevada following a transfer from Wichita State. Sherfield led Nevada in points (18.6), assists (6.1) and steals (1.6). In MW-only competition, he lead the conference in scoring (18.2), assists (6.7), assist-to-turnover ratio (2.51), free throws made (79) and free-throw percentage (88.8).

His campaign included three game-winning shots for the Wolf Pack in the final seconds of regulation, with two coming in MW play (a 74-72 victory over Boise State and a 85-82 win over Colorado State). The first was a 3-pointer in the final seconds of a 69-66 victory at Nebraska to clinch the Golden Window Classic title.

Joining Sherfield on the preseason All-MW team were Colorado State’s David Roddy and Isaiah Stevens, Fresno State’s Orlando Robinson and UNLV’s Bryce Hamilton.

The Wolf Pack went 16-10 overall and 10-7 in MW play last season, reaching the conference tournament semifinals. Nevada returns all five starters, including All-MW third-team pick Desmond Cambridge Jr., who averaged 16.3 points per game and made a team-best 69 3-pointers. Also back are Warren Washington (10.0 ppg, 5.9 rpg in 2020-21) and K.J. Hymes (6.3 ppg, 22 blocks), along with starters Tré Coleman (5.0 ppg, 20 steals) and Daniel Foster (4.3 ppg, 48.6 FG pct. over 11 games).

The Wolf Pack added five newcomers, including Division I transfers Will Baker, a former five-star recruit and 7-foot center transfer from Texas, as well as AJ Bramah (Robert Morris) and Kenan Blackshear (FAU).
