Takeout Tuesday: The best sushi joint in Reno, the AYCE sushi capital of the world

Growing up, I wouldn't have considered myself a foodie. In fact, I was the kid who hated Thanksgiving food (still do, to some extent) and would order chicken fingers at a Mexican restaurant while everyone else ate fajitas. When I was 18, I moved to Texas to play Division 1 softball and quickly realized my old-school chicken finger diet wasn't going to cut it. Shocking, I know.

My coach would take us to healthy restaurants (gross, I know), and left me with no option other than to order a nutritious sandwich or salad. As much as I don't want to give her credit for making me realize there was more to life than chicken fingers, I will admit after my freshman season I started to branch out and eat new things. I started ordering quesadillas at Mexican restaurants (big step). I even started throwing some turkey on my plate for Thanksgiving dinner.

However, it wasn't until I moved to the Biggest Little City that I began to realize what I had been missing all these years: all you can eat (AYCE) sushi. I love seafood and I have eaten sushi in the past, but it's expensive in the south. One roll can cost between $12-$15, depending on where you go and what you want in it. So, when I first moved here and my coworkers introduced me to AYCE sushi that included appetizers, nigiri, rolls and desserts, a new obsession began. A $40-plus meal for $25? Unreal.

In my four years of living in Reno, I've made it to at least 15 AYCE places around town. While each one has their own special touch, one in particular has me wanting to come back for more. Located at 5030 Las Brisas Blvd. in northwest Reno, Sushi 7 is under new management with a clean interior and friendly staff. When you open the menu, you will find a good assortment of cooked and uncooked rolls and an array of nigiri. Sushi lovers already know what to look for on the menu, but for those of you who don't, grab a friend or two, head to northwest Reno and try one of my favorite rolls! (Honorable mention to Tha Joint 2 and Poke King for also having great sushi options).

You can't go wrong with miso soup and mussels while you're waiting for your rolls, but make sure you try the yakitons, too. They look like an egg roll cut in half, filled with krab mix and a special sauce. A lot of sushi places have these around town, but the ones at Sushi 7 are top of the line.

Their nigiri is always tender and flavorful! Some must-trys:

Upside Down Shrimp: krab mix with shrip ... upside down. Friendly tip - don't eat the tail!

Donald Duck: salmon, avocado, krab mix and ox

Off menu - Snow White: yellowtail, avocado, krab mix and hot sauce. Just tell them Jenna sent you with the inside scoop. They'll understand.

Raw Rolls (best rolls)

Snow Mountain: breaded shrimp, cucumber, avocado, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, krab mix and habanero mayo. If I was ever on death row, this roll would be my final meal. It has a little bit of everything and is so dang good.

Yummy: white onion, jalapeno, cream cheese, panko shrimp, salmon, krab and honey mustard. If you're looking for something on the sweet end, this is the roll for you!

Okie-Dokie: salmon, cream cheese, sliced lemon, fried jalapeno and hot sauce. This roll sounds a lot spicier than it is, but if I'm craving a little bit of spice in my life... this is the one I'm going for.

Dayton: breaded shrimp, krab mix, cucumber, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, tenkasu, habanero mayo

Cooked Rolls

Tridelta: breaded shrimp, cream cheese, avocado, shrimp, krab mix and mango sauce

Spider: fried soft shell crab, krab mix, basil, cucumber and goma sauce

Lulu: fried shrimp, fried onion, avocado, krab and mango sauce

During the pandemic, Sushi 7 is open for dine-in lunch Wednesday-Sunday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Their hours for dine-in dinner AYCE are Tuesday-Sunday 4 p.m.-8:30 p.m. They are also offering 20 percent off to-go orders.

While quarantining and social distancing may not be ideal, you might as well eat a good meal while you’re doing it. Sushi 7 is reliable, fast and quality sushi perfect for a date night or to eat while binging Netflix. If it can get someone who was once as picky as me to eat as much sushi as I do, they must be doing something right.
