In last week's Takeout Tuesday, I talked about Midtown's best burger joint, Beefy's. This week, we are trading in burgers for crab cakes. A couple of weeks ago, my childhood best friend, Taylor, flew in from Atlanta to visit me for my birthday. Nevada had just entered phase two and only a couple of restaurants were open for dine-in seating. I was turning the big 26, you know that fun age where you have to start paying for your own insurance, so we decided the best way to celebrate was with bottomless mimosas. Reno is known for a couple of spots for bottomless mimosas, but the only place serving them in town at the time was a spot in south Reno called Land Ocean.
Located in the Summit shopping center close to the movie theater, Land Ocean is a steakhouse that has a diverse menu and some pretty awesome seafood. The restaurant has indoor seating (bar and table/booth) as well as outdoor seating if you’d like to dine-in. But it offers takeout as well, which comes in handy during a pandemic.
I've always lived in the northwest Reno and more recently Midtown, so I don't venture down south too often. Honestly, I probably wouldn't have found this place under regular circumstances, but I'm so glad I did. Not only did the food hit the spot, but the bottomless mimosas definitely helped make my experience down south one to come back for.
I'm nominating Land Ocean for Reno's best Happy Hour! From Monday to Friday, 3 p.m.-6 p.m. it offers great draft beer, cocktail and wine specials (while social distancing) with friends. My personal favorite is the Mt. Rose Mule Tahoe with Blue Vodka, lime juice and Bundaberg Ginger Beer. But if you've had a long day, a couple of martinis found their way on the list as well as some premium wines!
We arrived at 11:30 a.m. and the hostess sat us immediately in the bar area. Sidenote: Our waitress was named Nicole. and she's amazing. You should request her as your server. We ordered our bottomless mimosas to sip on while we looked through the brunch menu. I ended up choosing the "Crab Cake Benedict" with mango hollandaise, sweet pepper relish and country potatoes. The combination of this plate and a bubbly, fruity champagne drink hit the spot.
The crab had the right amount of tenderness, and I genuinely enjoyed the mixture of mango and the crab cake. Taylor had the Crème Brulee french toast, which was as amazing as it sounds. The french toast featured a toasted brioche bread caramelized in creme brulee batter, crispy bacon and country potatoes (wow). Sometimes I stay away from french toast because it sounds too sweet, but this was grilled to perfection. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
If you are looking to get out of the house, Land Ocean is an upscale yet casual steakhouse with a friendly staff that will make your night out one you'll be telling all your friends about in the future. Their hours are Monday-Thursday 11:30 a.m.– 8:30 p.m.; Friday 11:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Saturday 10:00 a.m.- 9:30 p.m.; and Sunday 10:00 a.m.-8:30 p.m.. Weekend brunch starts at 10 a.m. and ends around 3 p.m.. Just make sure you tell Nicole "Hi" for me!
