Nevada junior shortstop Lauren Gutierrez was named the Mountain West player of the week Tuesday after leading the Wolf Pack softball team to a win over No. 2-ranked Washington last Friday.
In five games at the Dixie State Classic, Gutierrez batted 9-of-16 (.562) and led the team to wins over Washington, Dixie State and Montana. The second-ranked Huskies were are the second-highest-ranked team Nevada softball has ever beaten behind a victory over No. 1 Arizona in 2008. The Upland, Calif., native also played errorless defense all weekend with nine assists and five putouts.
“Lauren has proven to be one of the finest shortstops in the country,” Nevada head coach Josh Taylor said in a news release. “Her steady play on defense and ability to always provide the team with quality at-bats has proven to be a leading force on both sides of the ball.”
In the win over Washington, Gutierrez went 2-for-3 with a single, double and walk. She drove in a run in the sixth inning to extend Nevada's lead to 7-5. The Wolf Pack won, 8-5. In a 13-0 win over Dixie State, Gutierrez went 4-for-4 with a career-high-tying five RBIs. He also went 2-for-3 with her sixth career homer in Nevada's 6-5 win over Montana. Gutierrez drove in eight runs in the five games.
This is Gutierrez’s second career MW player of the week honor and the second of the season for Nevada. Gutierrez was the last Nevada softball player to be MW player of the week when she earned the honor May 15, 2018. Sophomore pitcher Kendall Fritz was named MW pitcher of the week last week.
Nevada travels to Stockton for the Libby Matson Classic from Feb. 26-27. The Wolf Pack faces Pacific and Idaho State on Saturday and again Sunday.
