The Nevada softball team ends the 2019 season 29-27 overall after falling in the championship round to Loyola Marymount. The first game was decided in the bottom of the seventh, a walk-off home run that pushed the Loins up 4-2 but the second game was a different story. Seventeen runs between the two teams, not to mention the 23 hits between the teams but the 11 runs fell on the LMU side of the box score, 11-6.
In the first game, Sierra Mello was the first to help the Pack cross the plate, hitting a double to bring Lauren Gutierrez home for an RBI, 1-0 Nevada. Kenzi Goins with her 10th home run of the season tied it up 2-2 but it just was not enough as the Lions hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to force a game two.
Kendall Fritz started in game one and went the distance while striking out three. Kali Sargent got the ball in game two and started off hot as she threw 12 pitches in the first two innings but was relieved by Julia Jensen when the Lions took a 5-2 lead. Jensen pitched 2/3 of an inning before Fritz came back in and finished the game but in the end Jensen was issued the loss and finishes the year, 8-7.
Ashley Salausa and Gutierrez were the first two from Nevada to tally RBIs in game two and helped Nevada to a 2-0 lead. Loyola Marymount responded, scoring four runs in the fourth inning on four hits including a three-run homer. 5-2, LMU.
In the bottom of the fourth, Rachel Rodriguez jump-started the inning with a home run, Goins continued the scoring with a two-RBI single and Dallas Millwood made the comeback complete with her RBI single. Suddenly, Nevada had clawed its way back to the lead, 6-5.
It was however, short lived as a solo home run from LMU quickly tied it up. The Lions took the lead on back-to-back RBIs and the lead shifted back to Loyola Marymount, 8-6.
An error in the sixth inning and a pair of hits in the seventh gave LMU three more insurance runs to seal the victory and the Regional Championship, 11-6.
For the Pack though, Gutierrez, Mello, Rodriguez and Sargent were named to the All-Tournament team and the team went home with a runner-up trophy.
