Reno 1868 FC moved to within a point of clinching a playoff berth following a dominant 2-0 win Saturday night over Tulsa Roughnecks FC at Greater Nevada Field.
Forward Brian Brown led the charge as he became Reno’s all-time leading scorer (19 goals) after notching his 16th goal of the season in the 26th minute off an Antoine Hoppenot assist. Brown surpassed fellow Jamaican forward Dane Kelly (18 goals) in the all-time rankings in the Biggest Little City.
The assist also moved Hoppenot to within one assist of tying Chris Wehan’s single season record (12 assists, 2017).
Reno continued to test Tulsa on each possession and it didn’t take long to score the second goal of the night. Defender Zach Carroll headed home his second goal this year off a Chris Wehan corner kick in the 31st minute.
Reno went into halftime up 2-0 following a half in which the club shot 50 percent (4-of-8 on target).
Reno’s barrage of shots continued into the second half where the club recorded 20 shots, nine on target. Despite not scoring another goal, Reno controlled the rest of the match allowing goalkeeper Matt Bersano to record his second-straight clean sheet and Reno’s second-straight win at home.
Reno still has a chance to earn a playoff match at home should it win its last three regular season matches.
The only scenario Reno doesn't make the playoffs is if San Antonio FC wins their two remaining games, Reno loses its last three and Swope Park Rangers and Saint Louis FC get three points out of their remaining two games.
Reno hits the road to take on Portland Timbers 2 on Wednesday for the third time this season. Reno has won the two previous meetings this season, including a win that kicked off the club’s 16-match unbeaten streak (club record).
Reno returns home to Greater Nevada Field for the final home match of the season Saturday, Oct. 13 against Orange County SC on Fan Appreciation Night. The first 1,868 fans will receive a free cooler bag thanks to Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe and KTVN.
Tickets for that match can be purchased at Reno1868FC.com/tickets or at the Greater Nevada Field ticket office.
