Fernley takes down Churchill Country for their first 3A state championship since 1964

The 3A high school state championship game was on Saturday, November 23 at 4:30 pm between the 2018 3A state champions Churchill County and the Fernley Vaqueros.

Churchill jumped out first with a touchdown pass from senior QB Elijah Jackson to senior WR Brock Richardson.

Fernley responded quickly within minuets with a touchdown pass from senior QB Miles Steele to senior RB Lonnie Halterman to end the first quarter all tied up 7-7.

Early in the 2nd quarter, Fernley shut down Churchill's offense in the redzone. The Vaqueros moved the ball down the field and it was a Steele hand off to junior FB Brandon Reyes for the touchdown. 14-7 Fernley at half time.

Third quarter, Fernley recovered the onside kick but couldn't make anything happen. Late in the third, Fernley kicked a field goal to make the score 17-7.

Senior WR Tommy Mccormick of Churchill County ran the kickoff back for a touchdown to cut the Vaqueros lead and end the third quarter 17-14.

Not long after the fourth quarter started, Reyes ran his second touchdown of the night and gave Fernley a 24-14 lead over the Green Wave.

Churchill Country responded with a touchdown pass from Jackson to Mccormick. 24-20 Vaqueros with 1:24 left in the game.

Fernley blocked the extra kick and then ran the ball until time ran out - Final score 24-20 Vaqueros!

Vaqueros brought some hardware back with them to Fernley this weekend - their first 3A state championship since 1964.


Yerington takes down Lincoln County 33-7 to win their first state title since 2015.
