The Truckee Meadows Community College soccer teams will make their long-awaited debuts Thursday, but will do so with a new coach.

Nick Arbelaez, who was named the Mighty Lizards' first head men's and women's coach in January, has stepped down, Nevada Sports Net has learned.

“It was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make but I stepped down for personal family reasons that needed to be attended to," Arbelaez told NSN via text. " I appreciated my time at TMCC and especially working for Dr. (Tina) Ruff. I will cheer on these athletes and wish the Mighty Lizards nothing but success. The program is lucky to have Dr. Ruff and the supporting staff. I will miss them all very much.”

Ruff, TMCC's athletic director, told NSN that Brian Slusser, who was an assistant coach for the men's team, will oversee both programs on an interim basis.

TMCC will play its first soccer games Thursday on its home field. The women's team will host Feather River College at 3 p.m. Thursday while the men play Feather River at 6 p.m. to cap the doubleheader. The women's team will then scrimmage the University of Nevada on Friday at 7 p.m.

The Lizards will play in the Scenic West Athletic Conference this season.
