Murray's AP Top 25: Major shakeup at the top

Ohio State
Ohio State.

Nevada Sports Net columnist Chris Murray is one of 61 voters in the college football AP poll. Here is a look at the biggest movers and shakers in his poll this week.

Team on the rise

* Ohio State: After its win at Penn State, I moved Ohio State from No. 5 to No. 2. The Buckeyes now have a pair of quality wins (Penn State, TCU). So does my No. 3 team LSU (Auburn, Miami). So does my No. 4 team Notre Dame (Michigan, Stanford). That is why those four are higher on my ballot this week than my No. 5 Georgia (zero top 30 wins) and No. 6 Clemson (zero top 20 wins). As always, I base my ballot off what teams have accomplished on the field rather than “gut feel” or “eye test.” Ohio State, LSU and Notre Dame have beaten far better teams than Georgia or Clemson to this stage.

Team on the fall

* BYU: Seven Top 25 teams last over the week, including five of the bottom six. That led to a lot of shakeups at the back end of my Top 25. The biggest fall came from BYU, which went from No. 17 to unranked. Mississippi State (No. 22) and Duke (No. 25) also fell to unranked on my ballot. After its one-point loss to Ohio State, Penn State actually moved up a spot (from 11 to 10). After its loss at Notre Dame, Stanford fell from No. 6 to No. 12 (that game wasn’t very competitive as the Irish out-gained the Cardinal, 550-229).
