T.J. Bruce is entering his fourth season as Nevada's baseball coach, so it can be hard to remember he's only 36 years old. As such, he's one of the more accomplished under-40 coaches in the nation. How accomplished? Baseball America on Thursday listed the top-10 college baseball coaches under the age of 40 and Bruce made the cut, coming in at No. 8.
"Bruce came to Nevada in June 2015 after five seasons as an assistant coach at UCLA, where he helped the Bruins to the 2013 national championship. In 2018, he led the Wolf Pack to the Mountain West Conference regular season title, their second since joining the conference in 2013. He was a strong recruiter as an assistant coach and that has carried over to Nevada, which has consistently landed strong recruiting classes under Bruce."
In his first three seasons at Nevada, Bruce is 85-84 overall and 56-25 in MW play, including a regular-season conference championship last season. Bruce's team won 37 games in 2016, 19 in 2017 and 29 in 2018. In 2019, the Wolf Pack aims for its first NCAA Regional berth since 2000.
FanGraphs.com also took a look this week on the rise of Wolf Pack alum TJ Friedl, who was named the Cincinnati Reds' 2018 minor league hitter of the year.
