All-Mountain West awards: Martin twins, Jordan Caroline, Jazz Johnson honored

Utah State shared the Mountain West regular-season basketball championship with Nevada, but the Aggies didn't share many of the postseason media awards.

Utah State won player of the year (Sam Merrill), coach of the year (Craig Smith), freshman of the year (Neemias Queta) and defensive player of the year (also Queta) during Monday's announcement. Nevada's Jazz Johnson won the conference's sixth man of the year award, while Fresno State's Braxton Huggins was named the newcomer of the year.

The Wolf Pack still earned its share of honors, with Caleb Martin and Jordan Caroline making the All-MW first team; Cody Martin making the second team; and Johnson earning an honorable mention in addition to his sixth man of the year award.

Nevada and Utah State split the MW regular-season title with a 15-3 conference record. They went 1-1 in head-to-head matchups, but the Wolf Pack earned the No. 1 seed in the MW Tournament thanks to the conference tiebreaker. Utah State, however, earned the lion's share of the postseason awards thanks to its unexpected success. The Aggies were picked to finish ninth out of 11 teams in the preseason poll.

Here is the full voting for the media awards (the coaches will release their honors Tuesday). Here is how I voted, which is darn near identical to the overall picks. There were 11 total voters, one in each city where a MW team is located, sans San Jose State, which doesn't have a media member who covers the team. That vote was replaced by an at-large voter from
